This craggy ridge of glowing gas and dust lies in the constellation Cygnus, about 1,800 light years from Earth. The small, thin snaking structure in the bottom center of the image is a star-forming chamber. The twin filamentous shapes emerging from the end of the chamber are jets of material indicative of a “protostar,” a new star that is about to ignite.
